Experience a day of artistic immersion and nature-inspired creativity. Led by artist and tutor Jemma Gunning, you’ll spend the morning engaging in a series of drawing activities inspired by the natural beauty around you. These sketches will later serve as the foundation for your unique monoprint creations.
In the afternoon, we’ll transition to the studio for a hands-on printmaking session. Using our morning drawings as inspiration, we’ll craft a series of one-of-a-kind monoprints.
What is a monoprint?
A monoprint is a unique form of printmaking that combines the principles of painting and traditional printmaking techniques. Unlike other printmaking methods where multiple copies of the same image can be produced, a monoprint results in only one unique impression.
Here’s how it typically works: an artist applies ink or paint onto a smooth surface such as glass, metal, or a plate. Then, they manipulate the medium using various tools such as brushes, rollers, or their fingers to create a desired image. Once the image is ready, a piece of paper is carefully laid on top of the inked surface and pressure is applied, either by hand or with a printing press. This transfers the image onto the paper, resulting in a one-of-a-kind print.
What makes monoprints especially intriguing is the element of spontaneity and experimentation they offer. Since each print is unique, artists have the freedom to explore different techniques, textures, and colour combinations with every impression. This fluidity and unpredictability make monoprinting an exciting and dynamic form of artistic expression. Whether you’re a seasoned printmaker or new to the craft, creating monoprints is a captivating journey of discovery and creativity.
