A Truce with Time: The Cabin, Bucks Mills, then and now

The Cabin in Bucks Mills is described at the “summer studio” of artists Judith Ackland and Mary Stella Edwards, with an interior left almost as it was the last time the artists stayed there. It has an atmosphere all its own, which seems to collapse time. Rachel Marsh presents her pinhole photographs of the interior of the Cabin, taken during an artist’s residency in 2021, that capture its timeless quality and the vibrant materiality of the things that remain. The experience of being in the Cabin, and reading Mary Stella Edwards’ poetry, had a profound effect.

Rachel Marsh is now researching the Archive at the Burton at Bideford for a PhD that explores Mary Stella Edwards’ relationship with the more-than-human world. The second half of the talk will present photographs from the Archive of the Cabin, taken by Mary Stella Edwards and Judith Ackland, and from the mid-70s which show the Cabin as they lived and worked in it, alongside some of Edwards’ poems.
