Author Talk: Artists, Siblings, Visionaries – The Lives & Loves Of Gwen & Augustus John

With Judith Mackrell

11am–12 noon | £12

Acclaimed biographer Judith Mackrell presents a powerful portrait of brother and sister artists Augustus and Gwen John, whose experiments with form and colour created some of the most memorable work of the early 20th century. Augustus was celebrated as one of the great British talents of his generation. As a woman, Gwen’s place in the art world was much smaller, and it was only after her death that her gifts were fully acknowledged. But as Judith shows, both siblings led turbulent lives, forming multiple passionate attachments, and in Gwen’s case, with both men and women, and including a long affair with the sculptor Rodin.

This talk has been organised by the Appledore Book Festival. General public booking opens on Saturday 26 July at 9am.
