What is the role of art and artists in capturing the impacts of climate change? What responsibility do arts organisations have to engage audiences and encourage action on environmental issues?

These are questions that panel members and guests will be discussing at a symposium at The Burton next month, which offers a day of expert insights and collaborative conversations for everyone with an interest in art and the environment.

The Burton’s current exhibition ‘Melting Ice | Rising Tides’ by Royal Academician Emma Stibbon considers how the warming environment of the polar regions is impacting on the changing UK coastline, and makes connections between the remote extremes of our planet and our more familiar local landscapes.

The Art and Environment Symposium brings the themes of ‘Melting Ice| Rising Tides’ into a scholarly context for audiences interested in the intersection of art and the environment. The day-long event brings together artists, scientists, academics, curators, arts organisations and local environmental agencies to ground the conversations in the practicalities of local landscapes and action.

Confirmed speakers include Emma Stibbon (Artist), Dr Heidi Mostang (Artist and researcher, University of Plymouth), Dr Anne Le Brocq (Glaciologist and Researcher, University of Exeter) and organisations including North Devon Biosphere, Torridge District Council, Exeter Science Centre, Resurgence, and The Pickwell Foundation.

We invite everyone with an interest in art and/or the environment, whether professional or personal, to attend this event and contribute your thoughts and ideas. Tickets cost £25 (£20 concessions/£10 low income) and include lunch. They can be booked in person at the gallery, on 01237 471455 or via our website.

The Burton at Bideford is located in a designated National Landscape and part of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The ‘Melting Ice | Rising Tides’ symposium is supported by Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and The Friends of The Burton.
