OWN ART
The Burton is a member of the Own Art scheme. Own Art is a national initiative that makes buying contemporary art and craft affordable by letting you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan. Own Art loans are available for the purchase of contemporary art and craft of any kind, and in any media. That means you can choose more or less anything you want from paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, to glassware, ceramics, jewellery, furniture and textiles, as long as the work is by contemporary artists, is original artwork and within limited editions of 150.

Own Art is operated by ArtCo Trading Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary company of Arts Council England) in partnership with Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and our credit provider Hitachi Capital Consumer Finance.

For more information on Own Art click here. To purchase an item from the Burton under the Own Art scheme then make an appointment with a member of staff who will go through the process with you.

Craft Showcase: Ruth Chalmers - Silver Jewellery

Using traditional silversmithing and enamelling techniques alongside more modern materials such as epoxy resin, Ruth Chalmers’ jewellery is fun, kitsch and most importantly wearable. Typical work includes brightly coloured enamelled dresses a la Doris Day, miniature spitfires fixed forever in peaceful flight, friendly fuss-free dogs in brooch form and model birds pecking at silver seeds. Drawing influence from vintage fashions, family and home life, 20th century social history and thrilling stories of “derring do”, she creates small scale sculptural artworks which are designed to instil the wearer, or viewer, with a sense of another time and place.

If you're looking for that unique gift for valentines day - this showcase may be the answer. Displayed in the main entrance to the Burton it's well worth a look. For more information on Ruth Chalmers see our Craft Artists pages.

Craft Showcase: Lee May Foster-Wilson - Printed Wares

Lee May Foster-Wilson’s work explores the rhythms and stories of the natural world and the connection of people to nature. Images often feature critters, creatures and scapes of trees, sea and sky. Her paintings and drawings fuel a love of print and surface design and are translated into a range of wearable and useful objects including hand printed patterned scarves, illustrated jewellery and desirable home wares.

The different techniques and processes she uses all feed into each other to create a unique and colourful style full of painterly marks and graphic elements in an unconventional colour palette – Lee May sees nothing wrong with pink grass, blue trees and purple birds!

Lee May will by running a workshop as part of the showcase Unique Handmade Cards on the 7th April. Click here for more information.
