The Burton at Bideford is looking to recruit a Museum Development Consultant to help support the development of our permanent collection and how this is displayed in the current space and in the longer-term future.
Reporting to: Principal
Hours: 10-12 days
Location: Burton at Bideford, Devon, EX39 2QQ
Contract value: £4,000
The Burton is home to a small accredited display of items from a much larger collection. Items on display include artefacts relating to the history of Bideford and the wider area including a large collection of ceramics. The RJ Lloyd Ceramics Collection of predominantly north Devon slipware takes pride of place in the museum alongside other ceramics, calling card cases, artefacts from Bideford’s glove factory and a model of Bideford Bridge.
Our recently developed Audience Development Plan includes a key focus on developing the permanent collection in terms of future acquisitions, but also developing opportunities to make better use of the collection as a means to engage a wide range of audiences. The full collection is currently being digitised.
We want to consider the development of the museum in both the short term and longer term. The museum hasn’t been refreshed or reviewed for a significant period of time so we are seeking external support to consider how we can best display parts of our collection in the currently available space. This will include best use of the digitise collection. Looking to the longer-term future we would like the appointed consultant to work with the team to consider options for a larger museum space as part of a building extension enabling growth and sustainability of the organisation as a whole.
