Are you an artist interested in working with community groups? Not sure how to begin, how to get paid, or what to expect?
The Burton at Bideford is developing a new skills development programme for artists who are interested in socially engaged practice. As part of our research for this we are hosting a free taster session for artists who would like to explore this type of work.
This free two-hour workshop will include talks from socially engaged practitioners Carole Evans, Grace Gelder and Sharon Gale as well as a hands-on workshop to get you thinking about the skills and knowledge you want to learn.
What do we mean by socially engaged practice? This term can include any artform which involves people and communities in debate, collaboration or social interaction. Often it is organised as the result of an outreach or education programme, but many independent artists also use it within their work. Learning more about it can add new opportunities to what you can offer as an artist, including facilitating workshops with community groups, as well as considering how to work with communities in your own personal practice.
The session is free – booking essential via the button above or by calling 01237 471455. (If Eventbrite is showing as sold out please call the gallery as there may still be spaces available.) All we ask in return is your feedback at the end. This will help us to design a programme that meets the needs of our artist community and to seek funding to roll it out later in 2025.
