I was born in Bideford and am delighted to be exhibiting my work at the Burton. One of the biggest influences of my early years was my grandmother, a creative and talented dressmaker. Playing and experimenting with an endless supply of beautiful fabrics and threads was a great thrill and I savour many happy memories making all manner of things.

Visits to India have been a great source of inspiration and have consolidated my passion for textiles. My first trip to Gujarat and Rajasthan was intended to further skills and knowledge of textiles by studying traditional methods with local crafts people. It was an honour and delight to be invited to spend five days during one trip in a closed Muslim village learning specific hand embroidery techniques. Their rich sense of colour, design, decoration and imaginative use of embellishments have greatly influenced my work.

The materials provide the starting point. I may get inspired by a beautiful piece of silk for example or a particular embellishment. Each item is unique, some of the materials are hand dyed using natural mineral dyes and the individual item whether jewellery or a wall hanging is transformed through machine and hand embroidery.

In addition, my work in traditional and contemporary mosaic is complementary to my love of textiles. I tutor and run workshops and produce work for galleries, shops and private commissions.
