Cookie Policy

What are "Cookies"?

When we provide services through the Internet, we want to make them easy, useful and reliable.  This sometimes involves placing small amounts of information on your device (e.g. computer, mobile phone, or tablet) in the form of small text files known as cookies.  They cannot be used to identify you personally, and we don't save any personal data in them.

These pieces of information are used to improve services for you through, for example:

  • Enabling a service to recognise your device so you don't have to give the same information several times during one task.
  • Recognising that you may already have given specific information so you don't need to do it for every web page requested.

  • Measuring how many people are using services, so they can be made easier to use and there's enough capacity to ensure they are fast.

  • Analysing anonymised data to help us understand how people interact with our services so we can make them better

Our use of cookies is discussed in detail below but if you need further information about cookies in general, please visit www.aboutcookies.org.

Third Party (Other Site's) Cookies

On some pages, we feature embedded 'share' buttons or widgets that enable you to share content with friends through a number of popular social networking sites (e.g. Facebook).  These sites may set cookies which can identify you personally when you are also logged into their services.  This means they may be collecting information about what you are doing all around the internet, including on the Burton Art Gallery site.  We do not control these cookies and you should check the relevant third-party website to see how your information is used and how to opt out.

Whilst we don't yet use all of the above, these cookies will generally only be set if you are signed in to (or have been signed into) a matching account and are generally linked to the use of the Social Media 'like' buttons embedded on our site and many others throughout the web.  The use of these cookies is likely to have been detailed in each of the platform's Terms and Conditions or Privacy Policies.  For a refresher on these polices we've included links below:

As with the social networking tools (above), we cannot prevent these sites or domains from collecting information on your use of this content. If you are not logged in to their services then they will not know who you are but may still gather anonymous usage information (e.g. number of views, plays, loads etc). We do not control these cookies and you should check the relevant third-party website for more information about them and how you can opt out.
