In Camera: Snowdon provides a unique insight into the World of British Art and Artists. Curated by Robin Muir, the exhibition is timed to coincide with the British Art Show 7 exhibiting in Plymouth, and it includes around 60 of Snowdon’s iconic images. The exhibition captures some of the most important figures in recent art history, including Lucian Freud, Peter Blake, David Hockney and Eduardo Paolozzi. Originally inspired by the 1965 publication, ‘Private View’, of over 300 photographs documenting the contemporary British Art Scene, and more than 40 years after the book was first published, the exhibition, also encompasses a new generation of British Artists from the 1990’s including Rachel Whiteread, Damien Hirst and Chris Ofili. In Camera: Snowdon is accompanied by a publication of the same name.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, The Burton is the only gallery of its kind along the coast between Bristol and St Ives and 2011. The original gallery was opened in 1951. Two men, Thomas Burton, a wealthy local businessman; and Hubert Coop, a successful watercolour painter, combined to commemorate the untimely death of Burton’s daughter, Mary. Hubert Coop said, in the Bideford Gazette in 1949: “It’s a happy chance that two old townsmen have come together to make a last effort to leave the town richer than they found it. A gallery for the enjoyment, education and good of all, old and young, inhabitants and visitors…of lasting credit.”

Hubert Coop became a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists at the early age of 22; also exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1897. He lived in Goats Hill House, Northam, where he produced many local scenes. He loved the scenes he found on the estuary, river and neighborhood, and his paintings captured the clear beauty and colour he saw there. In Bideford he helped to promote the development of the visual arts, and became Vice - President of what is now the Westward Ho! and Bideford Art Society. Throughout his life he amassed a fine collection of paintings, porcelain and antiques, and because he felt that there was a special appreciation of the arts in Bideford, he left his collection to the town.
