Introduction
Welcome to the Burton Art Gallery and Museum Education Resource Pack. The following information is intended to help you plan and manage your visit to the Burton. If you would prefer to download anEducation Resource Pack click here, if you require a Schools/Groups Booking Form please click here.
Whatever the type of visit you intend to make to the Gallery, ideally we require two weeks prior notice. This will ensure that your visit does not clash with other visiting groups. If you would like to bring a group but do not wish a member of gallery staff to assist you with your visit, we would still request that you phone or email in advance to let us know of your intended visit and likely numbers. If you would like to book a School/College or Group visit please complete the Schools/Groups Booking Form and return it to the gallery.
Workshops/Tours/Talks
Education and engagement with the arts and heritage is at the core of our organisation. As such we will try our best to tailor something that fits both your requirements and our resources, whether that be a talk or tour by a member of staff or a specialist workshop, or if you would just like some advise on your visit. Depending on your requirements, we may request a voluntary contribution towards the workshop and/or materials, which can be discussed further on receipt of your booking form.
The Education Space
Our Education Space can be made available for visiting groups wishing to use it as a workshop for practical work, eating lunch, or storing bags/belongings etc. This space is lockable and so is ideal for groups to use as a base. We would request that large groups do book the space to accompany their visit rather than take personal belongings into the exhibitions spaces. As this space is available for external hire and is in high demand we do require that you confirm your booking of the space via the Schools Booking Form.
Within the Education Space we can provide the following equipment:
• Chairs
• Tables
• Slide Projector and screen
• Television and Video Recorder
• Overhead Projector
Transport
The Friends of the Burton Art Gallery are happy to contribute to the transport costs for Schools within the local area. Please indicate on the booking form, the estimated cost of your transport. This information will be passed to the Friends and you will then be contacted to confirm their support for the costs. The School is responsible for organizing and managing the transport. The Friends will then reimburse the school on proof of payment.

Arriving at the BAG&M
On arrival groups should remain in the reception area while the leader reports to staff at reception to announce arrival. A member of the Education or Curatorial staff will then register the group, record numbers and welcome the group to the Burton Art Gallery & Museum.
Car Parking/ Coaches
The Burton Art Gallery and Museum is situated on Kingsley Road, Bideford, adjacent to Victoria Park. Car parking facilities are available opposite the gallery. A short walk away, Riverbank car park offers short and long stay parking as well as parking for coaches.
Cloakrooms and Toilets
Groups are kindly asked to leave large bags on the coach or in the education space due to restricted cloakroom space. Toilets, including disabled facilities are located in the reception area. Please ensure children are suitably supervised at all times.
Whilst At The Gallery and Museum
During any visit teachers remain responsible at all times for their pupils and must stay with their group. A teacher/student ratio of 1 to 15 is required by the Burton Art Gallery and Museum. If you have a group larger than 15, we would suggest you split them up into more manageable sizes.
Health and Safety
Please remind your group to be aware of and respect other people visiting the gallery by not running or shouting. Eating or drinking is not allowed in the gallery or museum spaces. Cameras are not to be used unless prior authorisation from the manager/curator has been given. Depending on your requirements, you may also be asked to complete a risk assessment form prior to your visit. Again, this will be discussed with you at the time of your booking.
If you have any special requirements please indicate these in the School/Groups Booking Form.
RJ Lloyd Collection
Other exciting developments include the appointment of Jo Simpson, the RJ Lloyd Collection Learning Development Officer. This position is grant-funded for three years through the Heritage Lottery Fund and is specifically linked to expanding and developing learning opportunities following the Burton’s recent acquisition of the prestigious RJ Lloyd Collection of North Devon slipware pottery. If you would like to discuss possible collaborations, workshops, visits etc specific to the RJ Lloyd Collection please do not hesitate to contact Jo via the contact details below.
