For Families

At the Burton, one of our main goals is to become more Family Friendly. We started Kids Krate in 2010 (now called Crafty Kids for Under 5's), which has been a great success with over 1000 children, parents and guardians attending, many on a regular basis as well as one off attendances by holidaymakers.

We're introducing family friendly signage within the permanent collection displays on the first floor including an activity trail led by Pie-Rat, our museum mascot, for parents and children to follow together.

Every school holiday we offer The Burton Bag of Brilliance, a backpack of fun aimed at helping families explore the displays and exhibitions whilst having fun and learning together.

Throughout the year we offer a variety of events again aimed at families to enjoy or get to know the Burton together, many of these events coincide with national or local events, such as Bideford Heritage Day organised by Bideford 500 or the Big Draw, and Museums at Night.

As much as possible we try to offer our family activities for free, or welcome a donation, but many events and activities may require booking, so please check event details, and to book your place, contact the Burton.

Under 5s Storytime at the Burton

Under 5s Storytime at the Burton
10 - 10.30am Free
For Under 5s parents and carers

Stories, musical instruments and songs inspired by the Burton’s museum collections. Run by Bideford Library staff and relocated to the Burton to celebrate World Book Day, join us for
this fun family activity. No need to book, just come along.

Last time we did this 18 under 5's and parents came along to enjoy storytime in a different location surrounded by history. It's wonderful to collaborate with Bideford Library and the staff enjoyed it as much as the children.

Wrap the Burton in Bunting

Wrap the Burton in Bunting - Free
To celebrate the Olympic Flame coming to Bideford, we’re wrapping the Burton in Bunting and attempting to break the world record for the longest line of bunting ever! Join us to celebrate the torches arrival into Bideford and see if we can be record breakers!

With over 300 participants, we enjoyed the Lantern Parade last year so much that we thought we'd set up another community participation project. We're so excited about the Olympics and that Bideford (and so the Burton) will be a small part of the Olympic celebration by hosting the torch on its way to London. We'll keep updating you on how the bunting project is going via the website and the Burton's facebook page, but if you want to get involved - give us a call or email us.
