Using a clothed model, learn how to structure a drawing of a life model to create flow and proportion in your work. This workshop will include a series of shorter sessions working on: mark making and the use of different drawing materials, looking closely at proportions within a figure, the use of tone, and how to structure a drawing to create a convincing finished piece. The afternoon will progress to allow time for both quick and sustained work which aims to be fun and exploratory rather than critical and prolonged. Participants should bring with them a range of drawing pencils and rubber. All other materials will be supplied for a fee of £5 paid directly to the tutor on the day. Karen Hawkins is a public artist with vast experience in delivering both adult and children’s workshops across the South West.

Join Paul Thomas, Co-founder of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, as he discusses the exhibition and some of the thought processes behind the judges selections.
To coincide with the Talk and Tour on the 8th June Cafe du Parc will be open serving Tapas, £10 per person, last seating at 8pm. Paul's talk will start at about 7.15pm, so to make a night of it either book in for your tapas at 6pm or at 8pm.

Back by popular demand and led by Paul Thomas, Artist and Co-founder of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, this workshop is designed for those who want to explore their drawing skills and techniques on a larger scale. Encouraging you to loosen up, experiment and be creative this workshop is ideally suited for professionals and beginners alike. This workshop will take place at PETROC, North Devon School of Art, Brannams Campus, Barnstaple, details will be provided. Students should bring basic art supplies (selection of pencils, sketchbook, plastic eraser, pencil sharpener etc), scenic charcoal (thick sticks of willow charcoal) and masking tape. All other materials will be provided at an additional cost of £10 payable directly to the tutor on the day.

Heritage Day Guided Walks - Part of Bideford’s Heritage Day
Every 30 minutes from 1pm - 4.30pm

Led by Bideford 500’s living history volunteers, Heritage Day Guided Walks will begin at the Burton every 30 minutes from 1pm, and starts with highlights from the Burton’s Collection before a tour of prominent historical sites and buildings throughout Bideford as featured in the town’s Heritage Trail. Each tour lasts approx 1 hour, participants should be prepared for all weathers and wear sensible shoes for walking.

This is something we are really excited about - for a long time the staff at the Burton have talked about developing guided tours of Bideford, combining the best of both our services, heritage and tourist information. But Bideford 500 have beaten us to it, training volunteers, producing historical dress and developing a professional and expert guided tour of the town and its heritage trail, and so it makes perfect sense for us to work with Bideford 500. This will be the fourth year Bideford 500 have delivered a Heritage Day for Bideford. It will be on Saturday 30th June from 10am - 5pm, in and around Mill St and Cooper St, and this year it includes the Burton! Heritage Day recognises and celebrates the development of the port and town in the 1500’s and 1600’s, with a full programme of events starting at 10am. So popular was this workshop we're running a repeat date on the 7th July!
Taking inspiration from the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition, this free machine embroidery workshop is suitable for both beginners and the more experienced. The aim of the day is to make a panel to decorate a book cover, or produce a finished artwork to be framed. Students will start by working from their own doodles, drawings or simple photos, learning to transfer the design and to draw it with free machining onto fabric. Printing and paper items may also be collaged into the final piece. Students should bring their own sewing machine, with the ability to drop the feed dog (teeth) or cover it with a foot plate, all connectors, foot pedal, a manual if possible, embroidery or darning foot, machine embroidery needles, sharp fabric scissors, pins, embroidery or darning foot, 50cms of plain cotton fabric, Bondaweb, a variety of scraps of fabric in one colour way which can be used for a background, a chiffon scarf in the same colour as the lightest fabric in the background or white, machine embroidery threads in the background colour, black and maybe metallic thread, a plain paper note book or sketch book, pencil, permanent marker pen with fine point, and A4 piece of tracing paper, some doodles, drawings or clear photos of an image e.g. flower heads, a pet, a ship, some shells etc, and any printed ephemera that relate to the image. All other materials will be provided by the tutor at a fee of £4, payable directly to the tutor on the day. Rowena Light is an experienced textile artist who has exhibited internationally and leads workshops throughout Devon and Cornwall.
